How much NOx does a truck produce? If you’ve ever considered buying a truck, one of the things you have to take into account is the dangerous NOx emissions that it’ll create and add – in one year – to the already saturated South African vehicle population.
There are around 15 000 truck fleets in South Africa that have five and more trucks – representing agriculture, mining, quarrying, manufacturing, and many others – including 3 100 transport companies.
The vehicle parc model estimates that on average, heavy commercial vehicles travel around 50 000 kilometres per year with new vehicles, on average, travelling over 70 000 kilometres in their first year.
In 2020 there are over 366 754 trucks, registered on South African roads. With an average tank size of 250l; a truck produces concentrations of NOx in an untreated diesel exhaust typically between 50 and 1000 mg/l. Therefore one full tank can produce between 12 500mg/l and 250 000mg/l NOx, which roughly translates to 12,5kg NOx per tank, thus one tank for every truck in South Africa – creates 4 584 425kg NOx.
